Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Traditional Medicine Chinese diagnosis?

Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) takes a holistic approach to understanding normal function and disease processes in the body. It focuses as much on the prevention of illness as it does on the treatment.

The Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) approach to diagnosis seeks to identify underlying symptom patterns to indicate how your body is or has become dysfunctional.

The Chinese herbalist, Patricia will have you fill out a very long health questionnaire. She is looking for your underlying condition that is resulting in the problem you are having.

Clinical decision-making and patient management strategies must take into account the influence of contemporary Western medicine, including infection control practices and known interactions of herbal medicines with pharmaceutical drugs and other supplements.

How long have Chinese herbs been used for infertility?

Records indicating herbal treatment and products for infertility and miscarriage date back to 200 A.D., including mention of formulas that are still used for those purposes today. The famous Shang Han Lun is the first book devoted solely to gynecology and obstetrics, The Complete Book of Effective Prescriptions for Diseases of Women, was published in 1237 A.D.

Can we use Chinese herbs to treat infertility in both men and women?

Chinese herbs are effective for addressing imbalances resulting in infertility problems in both men and women.

What specific herbs are in the herbal formulas?

No individual herb is considered especially useful for promoting fertility or working with any other complicated disorder. Rather, more then 150 different herbs given in complex formulas comprised of 7 to15 or more ingredients are used in the treatment of infertility. Each formula is created with the purpose of correcting a functional or organic problem that are causing your problem.

The design of the formulas has varied somewhat over the centuries, based on prevailing theories and available resources. However, differences among individuals being treated accounts for the greatest variations in the selection of herbs and formulas to be used.

There are some “exotic” materials that are frequently found in Chinese herbal formulas, such as deer antler and sea horse, but the prominent materials are derived from roots, barks, leaves, flowers, and fruits. No endangered or protected species are ever used my Patricia Karnowski MSOM.

Formulas for men and for women tend to be different, but there is considerable overlap in the ingredients used.

How long do I have to take the herbs?

The length of time you will need to take the herbs will depend on how severe your condition is and how long you have had the problem and your overall health. Your ability to consistently take your herbal formula and modify your lifestyle where needed will also impact how long you need to take your herbs to see the results you would like.

With regards to fertility, it must be remembered, however, that approximately one-third of infertility cases may fail to respond to all reasonable attempts.

One advantage of the Chinese herbal approach is that benefits to health can be attained because the herbs address imbalances that affect your overall health.

How will I know my herbs are working

When you start to see the external signs and symptoms disappear or change in intensity you will know that internally, systemic changes are occurring.

In addition, you should have more energy, feel much better emotionally, sleep better and feel better physically. Of course when you are trying to get pregnant the ultimate sign of a successful herbal formula is a pregnancy that you carry to term.

Are these herbs safe?

Capsules: The granules are put into convenient capsules to avoid the taste. (Additional $20)

Fresh Cooked: The actual twigs and barks and seeds and things are cooked by the pharmacy. The liquid “tea” is put into one dose vacuum packed bags. These formulas do not taste good.
